first off -- the Pope is only imporatnt in a religious sense to those Christians who are Catholic. While there have been Popes who've spanned the denominations (look at John Paul 2) it's really an Rcc thing.
the pope is the leader of the denomination. when there are crisis or there is turmoil, he is the one to figure things out. kind of like with the president - there is the preseident, congress, house, etc - they all work together but the buck stops with the president. the papacy is similar. there is one difference - the pope is believed to be infalliable on matters of faith. this is not to say on a whim he can make proclaimations, but rather, he is to have prayed long and hard and come to enlightenment by God. That is his job.
he is just the shepard (pope), given the directions by God (by bible study & prayer) to direct his flock (us) to find the way to God & walk along His path.

No church was formally founded by Jesus, was of the Jewish faith and Baptized by John.
Jesus did say that Peter would found a church, who went off among the Pagan and Gentiles and did start a ministry in eventual collaboration with Paul and John.
But the Church that stands today was put together, along with the Bible that most Christians use, by Constatine in 3AD, after Peter, Paul and John were all dead.
This this Church quickly alienated the Greeks and Russians who maintain their own Eastern Orthodox with different days for Easter and no central head.
This Church raised armies that invaded the Middle East killing both Jews and Muslims along the way.
This Church held inquitions in Spain that killed Jews and Muslims.
This Church alienated England and Germany and spawed other new religion that were more liberal in their views of conduct towards people and didn't accept money for the relief of sin
The Chufch went from ruling more than half the known world in 1200 to representing only 1/12th by Today.
This Church allowed sexual predidtors absolution and free reign until Government and the People rose up in anger.
The Pope is the Supreme Leader, infallable and representtive of Peter or Jesus, thereby this is the legacy left to the name of Jesus.
Why the Pope hasn't applied the rules of Inquisition or Heresey to those criminal sinners who prey on young boys, is still something I don't quite understand.
I guess the Church must be in terrible need of Priests to keep these people, of which 15% of ALL Priests in America have had charged or allegations leveled at them. Yet only a handfull have been removed.
The Pope is the supreme leader of the Catholics and for any of them to go against him is heresy and blaphemy.
As for new, I have no great respect for any man in that office or that office at all until they clean up their own house.
This is the legacy of Jesus! Paying to be sinful. Pedophillia. Sexual Preditory actions. Tourcher. Inquisitions. Burnings at the stake.
All of these things are documented. All of these things were approved or went without sanctions!
That is what Jesus stands for!

The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church only. He makes decisions on Catholic doctrine. He is considered by the Catholic Church to have the same status as the original 12 apostles.

He is a figure of the church for the Catholic Christians not all Chritians. I am not fully versed on what he is supposed to mean to Catholic's, but he represents the church. He makes decisions regarding the direction of the church along with other important church related issues.

He is the earthly head of the one Church Jesus Christ founded for all mankind. He is not the head of churches founded by men in the past few hundred years, since these churches have separated themselves from Christ's Church.
