a nice big tossed salad will go well with bbq.
toss some lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, beet root in some olive oil and vinegar. add a dash of ground black pepper and its ready to serve. (u can also saute some garlic in the olive oil. discard the garlic and use the flavoured olive oil if u like. it will add a bit of zing to the salad)
u can also have mashed potatoes and gravy on the side.
end the meal with a nice cold shorbet or a big plate of assorted cold fruit cuts.

I think a good side dish for barbequing meat would be potatoe salad, or macaroing salad, or baked potaotes with sour cream or non fat butter. I always marianate my meat with low fat Italian dressing before I cook it. I do only cook and bake with olive oil. Also, have you tried browning sauce for other meats, it is fabulous and makes a great gravy. What about corn on the cob, or a Taco salad, or a regular salad, I put a lot of different spices in mine, ex: tiny cut basil leaves, I buy that spice, and lemon extratct, gives it a great taste, and the low fat rasberry viengarette dressing. I would not eat salads untill I started dressing them up with spices. Now I can't get enough, and I'm loosing weight. I would not salt the meat before I cook it though. Three bean salad is also a healty great dish. You can get so many recepies free off the internet. I have a complete file from many things. Oprah.com gives many healthy food advise. Enjoy!!! Lemonade is a good drink perhaps, or iced tea. When making anything, I would not be afraid of the spices. Maryann is great with a salad also. I get spices on sale at CVS or Rite Aid for $0.50. But I couldn't live without my browning sauce for other meats. Walnts, Almonds, and there is another nut to cut the fat in fresh tomatoes. I love Oprah.com for her healthy food facts. Check out recipes on the internet, and start collecting you own, if you like. Experian & Recepies for Living are great sites, I move them to my recipe file, for when I need them.

I LOVE a big, sweet onion cooked on the grill with lots of butter and hickory salt. Take the outer skin off, then cut about halfway through the onion several times. Push the butter down in the sliced areas and add hickory salt to the top. Wrap in heavy aluminum foil and put on the upper rack of the grill until tender. May take longer than the meat, but WORTH it!!

Potato Salad is cool and compliments well.
same for Cole Slaw, green salad, tabouli, or pasta salad.
Also, with cold salads, you can prep a day or more ahead of time and spend your weekend relaxing!
Just remember, anything with eggs or mayo in it needs to stay cool. You can accomplish this by using ice in a large bowl or tray with the salad nested in the ice until everyone has eaten.
For an additional hot dish, I suggest baked beans. Get a good recipe with bacon, molasses, and bell pepper, or just open a can of Bush's-they are really good and quick.
last time we bbq'd, i prepared 3 cold salads, meat, bread w/ butter, cheese chunks and home-made ice cream.
plus beer. Beer just tastes good with BBQ. or Sweet iced Tea...especially for family events.

Rice Pilaf and sauteed mushrooms go great with steak. Salad is always a must for meaty-meals, it helps cleanse your pallet. For ribs you might do some potato dish (mashed or baked). For chicken, a white pasta, like fettuccine is good. Remember White wine for chicken, red wine for beef. Check out www.epicurious.com for more ideas.

it seems to me by bbqinq all of that you would want to make some cold sides that can be prepared in advance ...you don't want to be cooking and bbqing at the same time ...baked beans ,potato salad Cole slaw pasta salad, three bean salad...and if your really pushed for time threes always cold from your deli....or suggest to the guest to bring a side and you have a couple for backup if they don't bring anything
