The most important part in battling cancer is a positive attitude. With my last bout of cancer (thyroid), my daughter bought me a healing crystal ... I don't know if it works or not ... who knows, maybe it does ... if one truly believes that it will. *shrugs*

It did lift my spirits and gave me a positive attitude. That was two years ago. I wish your friend well .... just being there for them, is the best gift you can possibly give.

What got me through long hospital stays and horrible cancer treatments was a beautiful journal I got as a gift from a friend. It's amazing how helpful this was and I continue to journal even now still. . .

I think pretty much anything from a friend given with love would help lift her spirits. I once gave my mom an angel teddy bear that said "I'm your guardian angel, I'm your special friend" when you squeezed it. I got it at a Cracker Barrel but I am sure you can get that or something like it at any hospital gift shop.
The most important thing you can give her is your friendship and time...a gift that never wears out and keeps on giving and lifting spirits!
BTW you are a good friend!

1. If she is not financially sound you can give monetary help as the treatment is very costly one.

2. Give encouragement. You can present some good books on Cancer, preferably written by Psycho-oncologist. I have given such a book named ' NOT OUT - WINNING THE GAME OF CANCER, A rule book for cancer patients and their families by D. Brindha Sitaram, published by Prism Books Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. It gives complete encouragement for the patient as well as the relatives (as the family members are more worried than the patient)

3. Pray good for early cure - This itself will be a great gift.

If the hospital allows it, electronic games and iPods are good to keep her occupied.
