I tried that with my Lab and I did so for the same problem. Honestly it did not have much of an effect on the problem. The only thing that made I HUGE difference is I changed his food. I was always told excessive shedding could be from a deficiency. I did realize like shepherds labs shed but this was crazy. An way I switched to Royal Canin Labrador Retriever 30. I have researched and tried every food out there and this is the first one that I am completely impressed with. My Lab's coat is great and the excessive shedding stopped. Royal Canin makes a lot of breed specific foods. Each one addresses the needs of that breed. I know that they do make one for German Shepherds and they address their sensitive skin with higher amounts of the omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. You can check out their website,www.royalcanin.us. It is extremely informational and have different sections for the different breeds. They also make a veterinarian line of food.

A raw food/ or all natural diet can aid in skin relief.
My bichon was very sensitive, i switched her food a few times and all her problems went away

Another option is an oatmeal bath once a week, this will wash away all sheddable hair and soothe his skin. Make sure it is an aloe, oatmeal, or milk bath. The shampoo should have as little ingridents as possible, rinse throughly. A long warm soak should really give him relief.

Regular/Daily gentle brushing will remove excess fur and only takes about 10 minutes if you take the time daily.

Make sure he doesn't have any fleas, some dogs are extra sensitive to these and it can cause huge amounts of irratation even with just a few fleas, not even a full blown infestation.

Be wary, some lea treatments will aggravate his condition, advantage ect can trigger skin allergies and sensitivity.

Brewers yeast I have never tried but have heard it can help.

One breeder I know calls the "german shedders", so that should tell you something.

Some people advocate brewer's yeast as a nutritional supplement, but if your dog is prone to yeast infections or allergic to fermented products then it can be detrimental.

Experiment with his diet to see if you can find something that he does better on.

Put him on thyroid medication.

Regular brushing will help remove excess hair and stimulate the skin.

Always use a hypo-allergenic shampoo and rinse very well. A good warm bath will help to remove a lot of the loose hair.

YES!!! They do shed ALOT! I dont know how much compared to a husky because ive never had one, BUT i've had a German Shepard. They need alot of grooming. If your planning on keeping him as an indoor dog you'll have alot of hair to clean up! They shed Alot especialy during the summer when its most hot, obviously. These dogs are better to be kept outside where you woont have a problem if he sheds his hair. I do suggest grooming ur dog constantly, that will help for the most part

I love all the "bathe every two weeks" and "comb everyday" answers on here. With the exception of 3 or so breeds of dogs... ALL dogs shed... just like you do! As long as their diet is good, there is nothing else you can do short of shaving the poor fella bald! The worst time is "blowing coat" in the spring... you should actually be getting into the "least" shedding time so enjoy, lol! Short haired dogs don't shed any less either... they just shed shorter hairs!

I would talk to a vet in this case about the best diet for your dog. Diet can really help with shedding. Also, brush the dog everyday or other day to help during the change of his coat.

Good Luck and Take Care

I thought I was the only one with a german sheperd shedding so much! My german sheperd lives in the house also and he sheds so much! I just deal with it by vacuuming every other day.

German Shepherds are notorious for shedding! Nothing you do will reduce this. Sorry to say this, but you're S.O.L.
