Uh, I think the guy should decide how much he's going to spend on an engagement ring. Despite what many women may think, guys really aren't that chintzy when it comes to engagement rings. The problem is many guys can't afford an expensive ring and don't want to go into debt to buy one. It's not that guys don't believe our wives-to-be aren't worth it; we're just trying to be realistic and not start out a marriage on the wrong financial foot. So what it really comes down to is a question for the women: What's more important, the ring or what it represents?

Just remember that the "traditional" amount of 2 (or even 3!) months salary is largely created and perpetuated by the jewellery industry. Many people have been sold this idea that a huge, expensive diamond engagement ring demonstrates a man's love or his ability to "provide for" his future wife.

If the two of you (or he alone) can't afford that though, what kind of sense does it make to start off in debt? My now-finace went into a couple of jewellery stores and was offered store credit cards and finance plans to buy a ring, but once we discussed it he realized that it wasn't what I want. We live together and share our money anyway, so buying something that we can't afford - when we'd rather have a wedding, a dishwasher, a new kitchen floor, etc. didn't make any sense to me. My ring is worth about $600 - though we got it for less, but what it represents is priceless.

i hate that everyone thinks they have to spend tons of money on an engagement ring, it's not even important. the wedding band is whats important.

i dont wear an engagement ring at all, just wear a wedding band.

Traditionally, it is 2 months salary. Nowadays, it is by personal choice (whether your choice or your wife's is another matter). For many, it is a bit ridiculous to get a wedding ring that costs more than a new car.

(FYI, my wife did not want me to spend more than $3K on a ring, and I won't say how much I spent because she is sitting next to me right now)

Why is it always about money?? How shallow?? This is the second question I have answered in the past hour about the man spending money on a ring. There is no set price. When the man finds the ring, he will just know!!! You don't look at price tags until you find the one that is suitable.

2 months salary is a lot steeper than it used to be. At least for most people. I would say it depends on the girl. If she's in to bling, he's in trouble anyway. If she's just a simple, down to earth girl, around $1000 for a solitaire and then dress it up with the wedding band, like a wrap or something when you get married.

My fiance told me its 2 months salary. But really, it's whatever the girl wants....as long as it isn't an obscene amount of money's worth. The ring is SO not as important as people make it out to be. The meaning of the ring means more than how big it is. (The sparkles are nice though....)

traditionally the suggestion use to be 2 months salary but in todays day and age much has change and it truly depends on the couple. If They are living paycheck to paycheck then it would be less or if they would rather put the money towards a house then once again it would be less.
For me I have decided $12,000 as a max if and when that day comes

It doesn't matter how much the ring costs, just that the ring is a representation of his love. How can you put a price on that?
