(Last Q about weddings, promise.....) So, the wedding is Oct 2007, and I have been browsing mags and web sites (like The Knot) for a little while. When is too soon to be going to shops to look up close at dresses and try them on? I'm not sure of when to start the process.

Also, I am such a girly girl--I fall in love with soooo many dresses I see. How will I know when to settle for one lovely dress? Sort of like how you know your guy is the one, you just know??

If you are falling in love with so many gowns, then you are fashion forward and stylish. You arent one of the girls who falls in love with it when she sees it. Number one Im jewish so an engagement soooo far ahead is news to me. Its never too early to look for dresses. I went to fashion school. So if you find a bunch of things in different dresses that you want and let me know I can sketch it out for you. Just tell me your body type and height and what you like and what you dont like and I would be happy to send you a detailed sketch. No charge, its what I love to do. :)

According to ModernBride You are ready to shop for your gown if: 1. You have an overall wedding budget in place;
2. you know about any rules governing dress style (like forbidding bare shoulders) at your ceremony location;
3. You have determined the level of formality of your reception;
4. It's 9-12 months before your wedding;
5. You know the price range of gowns in the salons you'll visit;
6. You've made appointments (if you need one) at the salons;
7. You have an idea about what you want but are open to suggestions.

This is from the Chicago edition of ModernBrides magazine, Fall 2006, page 194, bottom of page.

Hope this helps! Congrats & Good Luck!!

Rach, it's not to early to look and try on dresses. My precious daughter got married in May. She's a little plump, and she doesn't like trying on clothes, and she didn't want to go to the bridal stores because she afraid that they wouldn't have anything in her size or if they did they would be ugly and old lady looking.
So, she shopped on line till she found "the dress". We called the bridal shop listed on the website, and made an appointment to go and get her measured and order the dress......

Now, my daughter has never ever been able to keep her mind made up. For proms she would find a dress, then change her mind. I picked at everyone she would do it this time too. We went to the shop, and she knew how much I had wanted her to try on dresses, and share that experience with her. The bridal store was full of large girl dresses, she tried on one, and then I found another, she must have tried on 20. We had such a good time, and she loved a dress that she tried so, I put the deposit on it, she was pinned, so they could alter the dress for her. That was Saturday...she called me Monday, and I knew it...I just knew it...she wasn't the Happy Bride that I wanted. She was a satisfied bride, but my baby girl didn't want to say it, so I did it for her....I put a stop to the alterations and ordered the other dress for her......The dress had to be made special for her, and that take time, her dress wasn't here until 2 weeks till the wedding, and she was getting very worried. So was I, but someone had to keep it together.

So, with all my ramblings, what I am trying to say, it's not to early to go shopping for "THE DRESS". You might have to try on quite a few to find your prefect one. But you will know it when you see it, even my picky daughter, she just didn't want the extra expense and trouble that we went through for it, but it was well worth all of it-to see that smile and confidence on her face the day she married the man of her dreams in the dress of her dreams....

So, put those shopping shoes on, and don't forget to take some clips for your hair if it's long, and also a pair of shoes the height you are planning to wear for the wedding, so you can get the full effect of the dresses. PLEASE take Mom too, I just had the best and most memorable day with her.....

God bless us all...............

PS!!! TAKE A CAMERA SO YOU CAN REMEMBER THE DRESSES YOU LIKE AND SO YOU CAN COMPARE!!!!

It's never too early to start looking. They make the dress once you order it and sometimes it takes a bunch of months to get it in. I think mine took about half a year to come in. A lot of times, the store will hold the dress for you so you don't have to worry about it after it's in way too early for the wedding. Think about the style of wedding you want to have when looking for the dress. If you want an ourdoors wedding, don't go for the puffiest, fanciest dress. I got a dress with a puffy tulle skirt on it, and I couldn't have an outdoor wedding. It was like wearing a very effective bug net. Keep those things in mind, but when you try on the right dress, you'll know. Have fun!

I STARTED looking for dresses when I was about 14! I'd clip this bodice & that neckline & this hem & that train & this skirt & this waistline....I had aobut 30 pieces from different photos.....and when I was 20, not dating, much less engaged, I found "MY" dress on a clearance rack ( I was shopping with a friend) I bought it on the spot, and finally got to wear it 14 years later! Yes, it had to be adjusted, but it was the dress I'd dreamed of my whole life!
So, my answer to you is to start shopping NOW, don't settle for "Close to right" You might look for a good seamstress that could take your snippets & turn them into YOUR dress at a fraction of designer dress prices. (My aunt did this...she found a dress & took a pic to the dressmaker & paid 1/10th of the designer retail price for the same dress!)

I say start trying on gowns and seriously choosing about 7 months before the wedding. Yes choosing a dress is like that, you will know the dress made for you and your special day. blessed be

You can start looking now. It will take you a while to find just the right one, and bridal shops like several months lead time especially if it is special order.

Remember, there will also be fittings and alterations that need to be done right up until just before the wedding. You may not want to wait much longer to start looking.

Since you set the date, I think you can go now to find a dress. There are so many designers out there and so many choices to pick from, might as well start early. From what my friends have told me, you just know yourself when it's the perfect dress. When you do find your dress, you can cross that off your to-do-list considering the millions of others things you need to do.

It's been said that you are supposed to buy your gown a year in advance. As for falling in love with so many....it will be different when you try them on, trust me. You will know the one when you have it on. I loved tons and tons of them in the catalogs, tried some of them on until I found the one. It stuck in my mind and I compared all the rest too it. I just ordered it and it takes 3 months to make, so don't wait to long unless you want to buy off the rack, which is fine too.

Hon, you can go whenever you feel you want to. Maybe you can start now, and just go all over the place. You have at least 6mos to find one!! It might take that long to find 'the one'. I wish you luck and you can never ask too much. That is the purpose of this.
When you find the dress you want...You'll just know. I promise!!! It will fit you perfectly, it will be beautiful and it will enhance your already goddess body. If you think your groom will think that, then it is perfect!!! Good luck and congrats to you :)
