Did he really believe that he could really hurt the son of god in that matter?

Acts 9:5-6

"And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do."

Acts 9:5-6

The word "that's confusing for thee to kick hostile to the pricks" does no longer look in maximum early variations of Acts so is likely a later addition, subsequently present day translations do not contain it

Jesus' question to Paul could be paraphrased into modern English this way:

Are you tired of hitting your head against a brick wall? You are making no headway?

The "pricks" of the day were goads, like shepherds used to goad their animals to move in a certain direction.
Paul was trying to make Jewish believers turn around and go back against the flow.

For Paul to kick against the prick is a double meaning!

one is the center of a compasss to make a circle, the other is a nail at the end of a stick used to prod cattle!

Kicking the compas makes it hard to make a circle, to kick against the prod, can be painful!
