From Company's point of view, customer expectations are consistently being met. The company is then able to retain its customers and expand its business.
Service is also a function of meeting expectations through action and communicating a set of ideals that represent the company's service.
By communicating an idea what service is to customers, certain expectations are formed by the customer, based upon which the company can provide that said expectation, rather than an unqualified and unquantified measure of service, which leads to a greater subjectivity of good and bad service, where context, such as up market or regular run of the mill is placed a perspective and subjective arena of expectations.
The opposite end is where the dictates of the serviced customers are dominant and prevalent over what should be. Then what should be would form a basis of determining customer service.

Customer service is a subjective concept. ALL businesses have customers. Sometimes the customer may not be obvious but they are there. As a business person you treat your customers in some fashion. That is customer service, the way in which you treat a customer.
Since the concept is subjective, it is up to the customer to pass judgment on you. Is your "customer service" good or is it bad. If it is good, the customer will return and, more importantly, they will advertise for you by telling their associates about you. If enough of them determine it is bad, then you will be doing the work, you will be filling out all the paperwork to declare bankruptcy.
Good customer service is what makes a business successful. As a college professor once told me. "All business is customer service". As a customer you can buy a product anywhere, you buy it at XYZ products for some reason.
BTW, customer service can be as obscure as you care to make it. For example: "Location", the merchants choice of location can be established for no other reason than convenience for the customer base. Snap-on and MAC tools operate delivery vans that visit shops where they provide "customer service" by actually going to the customer with the products. It is a good marketing ploy. My brother is a professional mechanic and only buys tools from a particular tool dealer who visits his workplace twice a month and also by appointment.
Sorry about the length but customer service is more than a smile and "good morning" delivered by a cash register operator. That is part of it, but only the beginning.
One more thing, my answer has only scratched the surface. It is a respectable scratch but only a scratch.

When you go into retail in most places today there is no customer service. We need to go back to the time people really care about how they did their job. When people really cared about giving people proper informative information with a smile and a hand shake. When they didn't bring their problems to the job and take it out on the poor paying public. When they really cared if they help someone and made some one smile while they were handing over their hard earned money so you could get your paycheck. There was a day when people really knew how to help and treat people right. I think that went out with the cell phone age. Now when you go into a retail store or business everyone is on their cell phones instead of working what do you think?

A myth invented by the department store industry to make consumers feel like retailers give a damn with they think.
