It is a class picnic so you probably want to stick to the basics, sandwiches, fruit, and veggie sticks with a little ranch dip. Remember it is not only about what you are eating but what other people see you eat. It is a good idea to eat a little healthier than you normally do just to leave a good impression. Save the fried chicken for family only outings.

The classics: Cold Fried Chicken, Grapes (or Apples of oranges), Potato Salad, and for dessert an apple pie.

Another simple picnic would be wine and cheese. Pick out a nice bottle of Chardonnay or Reisling. Then buy a variety of cheeses: Brie, Provolone, Cheddar, Baby Swiss, Greyere, etc... Purchase a loaf of French bread, Ciabatta, Foccacia bread and some Dijon Mustard or some other spread. You can also purchase some Deli Meat. For Dessert: Fresh fruits! It's old-fashioned, but fun!

I make this for my family picnic. I like to keep it light, and avoid any concerns about spoilage.

I make sandwiches that are wrapped in the burritos, I believe they are called pinwheels or wraps. I spread whipped cream cheese, (use the whipped, it's so much easier to spread), layer deli sliced ham and chicken, (or whatever you prefer) ontop of that. I add cheese, and add lettuce, or tomatoes sparingly. Roll up as you would a burrito. If you want you can preslice them, so they aren't that large.

A nice dipping sauce for these "pinwheels" can be made using an 8oz tub of sour cream, mixed with a packet of Hidden Valley's "DIP". However, I would not travel with the sour cream, because too much sun would make this runny, or spoiled.

I also make a nice fruit salad, fresh pineapples, grapes, apples, strawberries. (Any hearty fruit will do).

I hope this helps, because I saw more hearty meals being suggested, but on a picnic I like to keep it light, with little need for napkins, silverware, etc. Enjoy!
