Just returned from a 10 day NYC trip. Here is what I learned:

If you have a zoo in your town or city, the Central Park Zoo will be a disappointment. It is small and does not have a large variety of animals. I've heard the Bronx Zoo is good, but if you've been to zoos before, then most of the time a zoo is a zoo.

The Aquarium on Coney Island is kind of sad, too. The most interesting thing there were the sea horses and the walruses, but there again, if you've been to an aquarium before, you may not like this one. Walking the boardwalk in Coney Island was cool, and there is an amusement park you might enjoy.

You have to go up high for a city view during the day and again at night. It is breathtaking. I suggest Top of the Rock (rockefeller center).

The dinosaur and fossil exhibits at the Museum of Natural History are unreal...I loved it. We spent 5 hours in this museum and I have not seen everything. You can get a map of the place and pick which exhibits interest you most and go for it. We did all the extras, like the Imax and such, and while they were interesting, it took too much of our time. You have a time stamped ticket to go to each one, so you're running around and through exhibits to make it on time.
The museum is right across from Central Park. Take a walk through there and look for the street artists. I don't know the cost of a portrait, but they are super talented people, and that would be a great souvenir...one that would last a lifetime.
Chinatown can be intimidating. You are bombarded by shopkeepers and street vendors, and most signs are in Chinese. If there is a tour there, I'd take that, but don't go alone.
Hope this helps...have a great time!

There are tons of great things to do in NYC. There is the American Girl store in addition to the Toys R Us with the ferris wheel. Another great place to go is Madame Tussaud's museum. It would be great for you and your daughter because the wax figures look so real. In October it may a little early for exciting but it is an option. Also the Statue of Liberty. Have fun!!

I would like to know this, too! My 10 year old daughter wants to go next month, and she is dying to go to the American Girl store! She has 5 AG's so far. We live in a small town in Southern States, so this will be such a treat for her. I was about to post this same questions, so I'll be waiting to read some of the answers.
