You may want to consider living closer to Modesto as commute traffic, cost of gas etc. There are multiple smaller communites within 30 minutes to 1 hour of Modesto vs the commute on 99 north and south. Sonora is great 1 hour to the east via Hwy 108.

Sacramento is probably an hour and 20 minutes north of Modesto without traffic. Lodi would be halfway between the two cities I would guess and it's a nice town with a cute developing downtown.

It is 82 miles away and the drive is around 1 hour 15min if you don't travel in rush hour. Rush hour can easily double travel times here in Sacramento. If you are traveling between 6am and 9 am you could be spending alot of your morning on the road. So travel time would be a minimum of 2 and a half hours per day and could be up to four a day if you encounter rushhour or road construction.
