GNU is a free operating system consisting of kernels, libraries, system utilities, compilers and other auxiliary applications.
It all started in 1983, in the same period when Linus Torvalds started porting Unix to intel based pc's (called it Linux). GNU is not Unix, and currently not even Linux kernel is recognized as GNU, since it was made after Unix!
All software that were released under the GNU license where not only free of charge but anyone could take the code and modify it (eventually making their own version). For example: GCC (GNU Compiler Collection), X Window System (on which GNOME, KDE or XFCE are based), binutils (GNU binary utilities) and so on!
Of course many of these have been ported to Windows, MacOS as well.
