I am flying into San Juan for the first time, but have had to purchase a separate ticket to my final destination. I only have about an hour to claim my bags and recheck in to my final destination--is the airport small/efficient enough for me to accomplish this? Thanks!

Yes, you can do it.... My recommendation is that you get a seat next to the exit, so you get out earlier. But I can asure you... The airport its nothing compared to JFK(NY), O'Hare(Chicago), Atlanta or even MIA (Miami)...

And people here are pretty helpful, so if you are delayed or something they could give you a ride in some of those golf cars... just ask.

From the terminal to the baggage claim could be (if you walk fast, like people usually do at airports) in less than 10 mins.

I am guessing you are connecting to an American Eagle flight... which is in Terminal D (American Airlines is also Terminal D). American Eagle usually departs from gates 1-8, 9-18 is normally for AA flights. If you are traveling in AA you will arrive to 9-18 take down the escalators and turn right to baggage claim (FYI bags take a while in San Juan... it could be 15 mins or even more, if you can fly with a carry on it will be better). Get to the upper level and check in. I hope you are flying American both flights so you could stay in the same terminal. It is a small airport, but with such short time it may not be as efficient as you would like to.

I am a travel agent. You should have allowed three hours for change plans with your separate ticket. If your first flight is delayed that will cause you some trouble. And it will take a while to claim your pages and then go recheck in. You better hope that there is not long lines at security either. If you miss your flight just notify the airline and usually they can just place you on the next one, unless it is full. Good luck. And maybe you should get a map of the airport to become more familiar with it. Most airports have those maps on there websites.
