Wow! I am amazed at how many people agree on this. I actually thought I was in a minority until I read this question and all the answers that agree.
I think there are many reasons why people swear the way they do these days. Firstly, peer pressure and cultral "norms" - everybody else does it therefore it is cool (similar to the reason young children start smoking.) Then there is the decline of society in general, people like us who probabley weren't/aren't in "in-crowds" are a minority who may teach our children right from wrong as our parents did for us but the many people having children these days have themselves had little moral discipline (hence the rise of teenage pregnancy/single mothers) and this is passed on to their children etc etc. And then there is the fact that this declining society holds little regard for a good education, preferring instead to hang out in town swearing, smoking, drinking and having sex because that's what their parents did and no one is actually bothered if they go to school or not. It's a vicious (downwards) cycle.
Or maybe that's just Reading!!!

I agree, not only because our neighbour seems to swear whenever we're in the garden (I think he might be trying to tell us something), but also because my daughter has started repeating everything...
Someone get me a swear box!
Seriously, I noticed I swear like a trooper when I speak my mother tongue with friends. It's as though slang and swear words are hard coded in and the rest needs a serious upgrade!

I agree although I find myself contradicting my own views sometimes just to fit in with some of those people. I believe since the sixties the verbal revolution has made it possible for swear words of those types to be integrated into daily speech. It stems from one fact: Culture is learned.

I agree, the thing is that what is in your heart and head will come out in words. You hear bad words all over the media, children grow up hearing their father screaming it at their mother...
By teaching your children and by setting an example for others, maybe you could start a ripple effect, causing somebody else not to swear.

I curse all the time. I don't think that we should judge words. i don't think I should have to worry about what i say, just because some person decided that f**k and s**t and things like that are "bad" words. they could have just as easily said that cat and dog are "bad" words...I mean...c'mon. does it really matter anyway? I'm not sayng that respect doesn't need to be there either though. I don't say "bad" words around my mom and dad and people that don't like that. I do have respect for others. I do say whatever i want other times though. i am 26 years old...i can do that. It is just words. Sometimes the best way to describe the extremity about something is to f**king say a "bad" word or 2...or 3...or 4...or 5...

The thing I hate the most is when I am at a restaurant (like Olive Garden or something) and the people at the table next to me are loud and they keep swearing. For goodness sakes, we are in a restaurant! Shut your mouth! Not to say that I don't swear, because I do, but it is not in my everyday, every minute conversation.

I disagree... just to be different. Depends on the group I'm out with. When my girlfriend comes out with me, the lads dont swear at all. Same if they bring their g/f's out, but if it's just lads, we tend to swear more. In London, F*** is an everyday word, and not frowned upon or viewed as offensive. It's just another adjective. Chavs are the same with the C word!!

" Vulgarity is a crutch for mental cripples", that means that a conversation with a skunk is going to be punctuated with short bursts of smelly stuff, because they lack the civility to use the proper word to communicate. It is not cute, it is not cool,
it is not av-ant gard, it is not new wave, it not unique, it is not elegant,IT IS...."F**** I don't know the word cuz mi IQ is low."
Of course there are the legitimate obsessive mental medical conditions of ca-pro-filia and algolania, that compel some people to dwell constantly in the muck.

I have a habit of swearing, but I really only do it in front of people I know well. Yesterday I walked by a group of people and one girl was saying, "f* this, f* that" and it kind of got on my nerves that she would do that in front of a stranger. You don't know who you are offending. I also heard one guy swear in front of my 10-year old niece, (It's nothing she hasn't heard before, but she shouldn't have to hear it anyway.) I control my swearing around strangers or in public, and I really should stop in front of friends (and family!) too.
