Not real tears, but yes they can cry in their own dog way, just like they show affection and joy in their own way.

Yes, and this is a very unpleasant story. I am a groomer. For a short while I was working for a large chain...won't mantion who...NOT Petco...I work there now.

Anyway, there was a young lady grooming a very elderly German Shepard. She was pulling the poor thing's back legs so hard, it was screaming and crying.

When I said that the dog needed to be treated more gently, I got a stream of profanities slung at me. Needless to say, I reported the incident. After you've been in the business awhile, you can get hardened but this incident made me cry for the pain the dog was in.

Thats the closest to a human cry I've ever heard and it still haunts me. I'm not an animal rights nut, but PLEASE, people, treat your pets with kindness and watch who you allow to take care of them.

Yes, in her own way my daft dog does, you should hear her when she is going on the moors each night for her walk, she cries all the way down the road till we get there and she has this crazy smile that just make me howl laughing, its so funny, she looks just like Elvis when she smiles.

Yes. We have a very SPOILED Bichon. When he doesn't get his way - he gets quiet and big tears gather up in his eyes. We had a pomeranian that did the same thing when we put him in the corner for being bad. He'd go when you told him, but look back several times with BIG tears in his eyes. It was a KILLER!!

My samoyed once saw a freshly-killed deer which had been gutted and tied over a jeep fender (first day of hunting season).
He sat by the deer and howled. I had to take him away, still howling. He was very unhappy for hours afterwards.

I've never seen my dog cry actual tears from sadness, but she does get sad and mopey -- especially when she knows I'm about to leave for work.

Yes, but it was an act. My daughter's chihuahua mix is very intelligent. If we are ignoring her, she will sit in front of us & keep squeezing her eyes until tears come out. I also knew a doberman whose owner taught him to smile. He shows his teeth & wags his tail. One more was a ger shepherd who was raised with cats. He would get near people & emit a low growl. The owner explained that since he was raised with cats, he thinks he's purring. Don't underestimate animals.
