That is the baby's sternum...do not touch it. It is a bone. You can press on it and it can perforate her lungs or whatever is under it. That is why the hynek maneuver is dangerous and you have to know what you are doing before you apply it or you can kill the person! Always feel for where the ribs meet and go at least a fist size below that to do the maneuver.

So don't touch baby's sternum!!! It wouldn't be so visible if the baby was chubbier.

A floating rib? No hun...it's a sternum. :~)

Melissa, all of the above are interesting answers, but this is a baby and none of us are doctors. You're not going to find a doctor sitting around answering health questions on Yahoo. Go to your doctor and get the right answer right away. Never put your child's fate into the hands of well-meaning, but ignorant people. We could really give you a bad answer that your child would pay for. Not a good move.

No, it isnt. I went to school with a guy that had this. The bones are forming wrong there...if its the same thing. Id take your baby in and ask a doc about it. Something is either growing there, or the bones are forming wrong......This is if its the same thing, but thats what it sounds like.

The question itself leads one to think of you meant poking out something else (cervix) which does no longer be stable! you need to be greater worrying in case you do no longer experience infant circulate for greater suitable than 24 hours! you would be ok and in simple terms enable your doctor understand your concerns at your next appointment! stable luck!

I'm guessing its where his or her ribs meet. I don't think their sternum and ribs are fused until they grow considerably. I have seen this before.

Ask your pediatrician these questions, you pay him for his knowledge. Or Google it for answers.
