In the rap group De la Soul's song "It's like that" one of the trio raps...
"It's like, who would of thought
If you would of bought
Into my religion you'd be more like God
But you were steady swimming so you more like cod
See these fools is fish scale, converting to ishmael"

Is he making a reference to himself being a christian or muslim or his he criticizing both religions...i've been having this discussion with a couple of friends of mine and i think that he's criticizing both religions...tell me what you think serious answers please!!!

Unless you have first hand knowledge, there is nothing about Christianity in the song.
Now taking it line by line we find that all he says about his religion is that if you buy in to it or if you accept it you will be more like God.
We do not know what is his religion.
The 'but' in the following line implies that he is of a different religious sect.
But you steady swimming so you more like cod. Cod is a type of fish. Fishes swim without really have a sense of direction but they continuously do it anyway.
See these fools is fish scale, converting to Ishmael.
Now we know that you do not eat fish scales They are destroyed, thrown away whatever.
Converting to Ishmael.
Ishmael rhymes with scale in a special tone.
Therefore, these fools are destroyed converting to Ishmael.

Based on the thought that Ishmael started Islam we must assume he is speaking of Islam.
So he is making reference of his religion which allows him to be more like God. It doesn't have to be christian.
But he is also saying that people are destroying themselves converting to Islam.
So i would have to say that he is criticizing Islam. And prasing his religion whatever it is.
That is my take.

He is critizing Islam because he used the name "Ishmael"..Most wrongly believe that Ishmael (Abrahams son by his bond servant)
was the beginning of Islam.
But he is also wrong in his assumption that "his" religion makes one "more like God"...That aint Christianity...

The lyrics could have extra effective metaphors, catchier refrain, etc, yet its a sturdy initiate. i think of your off to a sturdy initiate yet you could evaluate dividing this song into quite a few songs in the journey that your in a band. would desire to be exciting.
