Music related companies won't give you any support unless you are pulling a lot of punters to your gigs. How do you get people to your gigs without a music company backing for promotion, airplay etc. The small band catch 22.

I believe the music is good and the live shows are good.

Anyone got any ideas?

Time to go from garage band to bar band.

Get some gigs in the bars. The owner will want you back if you are good. Start playing in several bars a week -- get out there. Play near the local college in those bars and see if the Entertainment Committee will promote a show on campus in the gym or outdoors.

Sell CD's at the door, give away tee-shirts. Get the local paper to interview you for your charity causes (or whatever) some human interest hook.

Mix 'n match, sit in with other bands and invite other players to join you for a jam on stage. Get to know everyone. Ultimately it'll be who you know not how good you may be. Respect everyone music -- there is sometimes a temptation to diss every other band because you think of them as competition -- don't do it.

You are going to have to work at it if you want to be a success. Obviously there are a lot of bands out there.

AND remember -- it's supposed to be fun!

Party on, Garth.

The best way is to burn a disc of you best 3-5 tunes and then send it to club owners, music executives, friend ect depending where your at musically, If you need gigs personally present the dics to club owners with your sset list and a few Nice professional photo's of your band. once you get a gig or two then email all your friends and relative and get them to show up to the gig.
This will make the club owner happay and he'll hire you again.
Then create a blog on Myspace about the band, When at the gig put a calender with your web site on each table . Masure the event calender has a tear-off so people can give thier email address and start and email list so you can email all your friends fans club owners of where your playing.

As momentum builds contact music excs and get them to t5he gig with the smae procedure

Make lots of discs and leave them for free at music stores and rwecord shops and clubs along with you calender and website info

This works and works well!!!

Right here on this site is one good way to get some recognition. It is so easy and costs little to make a decent CD of three or four of your songs. There are several places you can put them on the web. then ask us to have a listen and leave the link. If people like it they will want more. There are many different ways to put some music on the web so check it out. This day and age the web is a very good way to get peoples attention. there are other things you can do as well so keep trying.

Try befriending members of some bands that are already fairly well-established and play similar types of music and then try to get gigs with them. Those bands will draw in a decent crowd for you and you can try to promote your music to their fans.

Lots and lots of word of mouth, ask friends to bring friends that bring friends. Plenty of advertising, posters, websites (myspace etc) get the word out. I am also in a band and we had our friends and family brings friends and now we have a pretty good following. If you need any help with Promo Packs or advertising, let me know, i do this for a living! phgandp@aol.com
also, give the word about a month before the show and then a week or so before so people can plan for it

Hopefully you have a website? Post samples of your music on your website, along with show pics. Then print the web address on little slips of paper and spread them EVERYWHERE!!!! Idle curiosity will drive people to your site, so make sure the site is catchy enough to reel them in.

i have tons of ideas it's call self promotion! if your music company haven't noticed you yet that's because your not promtioning yourself!
airplay is not what you want trust me i'm dj and the odds of your song getting play is like 2% most radio is ran by big wigs and corporate companies! so unless you are in the papers and mags you will not get airplay!
However there is 1 expection! School radio, got to college radio stations they will play yoursongs they willeven interview you! just contact them and see what you can set up! keep trying they are busy! and forget to do other things!

get pins and shirts,, and before you play at "bar name here" promoted it see if the bar will split the cost with you when you make the fliers! when your at that show have fliers for your next show and after you play go to the people you don't know and say so what did you think.. hard but it's how you make fans! it shows them that you care and if a singer, guitarist, bassist or drummer comes up to me while i'm at a show it makes me feel like a little girl in side! so approach as many people as you can at your shows that you don't know! don't DON'T go hang out with your friends and other band memebers well you can but everyone else is doing that and you see where it gets them!
and you can stop by and say hi instuff i'm not telling you to ignore them i'm tell you to pay more attention to the people you don't know!
so when you walk up to someone you don't know
say Hi how did you like the show? wait for answer
then say well i'm glad you showed up! Here is my flier to our next show and here is a button or a sample cd for you to remember us by! See you at our next show! Thanks again! hang out a bit if they seem interested and chat.. try to make friends... This is call networking! very usefull tool when you are in well ANY FIELD...
if someone doesn't really seem interested and they seem like you are interupting them and you'll get it! and you'll know the ones! they won't look at you! Just be kind and thank them again for hanging out give them a flier and find someone else!
if you get somone who is rude just wish them a nice day and move on don't get up set not every one will like your music! and that's normal! but don't let the bad apples get you down it could ruin the rest of the bunch if you let them get to you! and who knows maybe a music scout is out and you just gave him your demo cd! Kicken!
Good luck
The bill will be in the mail for about 250... that's my fee!
lol
J/K
maybe

Go to an area with lots of poeple like a park or something. Or give out fliers to people in the neighborhood you want to do your show like a day before the show.

Hand out fliers, stick banner up naer or on your house. Just any thing to show that your band is truly awesome and make people want to come to it! =)
