I broke my fibula towards the ankle area about 5 weeks ago and am due to see the doc tomorrow possibly to have my cast removed. Should I expect to start walking immediately? I don't feel pain anymore and I can stand on the leg quite alright.

Why don't you ask the doc tomorrow? Chances are that your calf muscles will be a little weak and the break won't be healed 100 percent. You probably will be able to walk some but will have to take it slow. You might be able to walk around your home but don't plan on walking that 5K event for another month or so.

Since the break is near your ankle, that puts nearly your entire body's weight on the spot that's still healing. I'm sure the doc will tell you to take it slowly but just wait to get the straight info tomorrow.

No! This is a very small bone and can re-break easily. I was in a wheel chair for 3 months and crutches for another 6 or 8 weeks. Don't rush it.

Your Doctors x-rays will Say the most. I suspect my break was worse and my age is older. Mine broke on both sides and has plates and screws on both sides. Although it is perfect now 5 years later.

Good Luck and be careful.

If the doctor removes the cast you should be good to go. I was when I broke my ankle; when the cast was removed I was fine. Of course I didn't run any races, but I was not athletic before that.
