My cat loves the balls with the bell inside. It not only makes noise, but the bell gives it a lopsided weight to help it move a little. I've tried those fishing-rod-looking toys that you suction cup to things -- they get ripped off or broken. The toys you hang from a doorknob can also get broken if you have a very frisky kitty. (An old cat of mine would rip the toy of the elastasized string then try to eat the string.) So, beware of those toys, even though they seem perfect for solo kitties.
My cat loves toys with crinkly sounding stuff inside. You could probably make some yourself and stuff with a plastic wrap with some body to it. (Plastic garbage bags seem a little too thin for this.)
Also, an empty box is fun for kitties. Mine likes to jump in, then out, then in the box. =)

Cardboard boxes
paper grocery bags
the ring around the cap of milk containers.
Old socks with paper towel or cloth stuffed in the toe and tied in a knot. Put some cat nip in there too, they love that.
Pet stores have plastic, hollow, donut looking things with a ball inside with slats and holes the cat sticks it's paw into and bats the ball around. Cat's love them.
Get pots of catnip, mint and cat grass. That way she can have a yummy treat when she wants it.

My cat's favorite toy is a little pillow made of synthetic lambs wool and stuffed with catnip. She throws it around the house for hours.

Go to a pet store and get her catnip toys made by "Kitty Hoot" cuz this brand is safe and durable and cats love them. My two black and white adult cats bat them around to each other all the time.

I make little triangles out of crisp packets and mine, my neighbours and my mums cats play with them for ages. Make sure you have plenty though as like balls etc they can get stuck under your furniture and before you know it they've torn your sofa trying to get at them. You can also scrunch some paper up into a ball and dangle it off a door knob

If your cat is anything like mine (and by the shoestring fun it sounds like it) the simplest toys work best...she gets _really_ bored really fast with store bought toys.
Second to shoelaces she likes to bat around balls of tin foil. You have to make the ball not very tight - it needs to be very light-weight to make it easier for her to bat around more chaotically.
Cats seem to like the way the tin foil moves, more randomly than bouncy balls, and I guess they like the sparkle too.
Check out this book too if you can get your paws on it, called 51 ways to entertain you housecat while you're out.
