Check the programs that are starting with Windows. To do this, open your Start menu, click Run and type "msconfig". Click the Startup tab. Chances are, you dont need most of those items at startup, so unselect them all except any anti-virus software. Also check the Startup folder of your Start menu and delete any shortcuts you find there. Finally, do a defrag of your harddrive(s).

If stopping any of the programs causes problems, simply run msconfig again and re-enable them.

Run disk cleanup and disk defrag, which is located in the system tools tab under accessories (startup menu). This will clean up old/temporary files that are slowing down your pc.

Also, keep in mind, that as you add more & more software on your hard drive, that's just that many more programs that are starting up along with your pc.

Good luck!

There are a lot of reasons the machine could be getting slow. You might check the articles below for some ideas and other resources. They mention both items within your start and also Windows services.
