I'm not sure if you mean brands of clubs or which club to use on the course to make a certain shot....I'll answer the latter using a traditional set of clubs.

The main reason you use one club over another in Golf is because you want to hit the ball a certain distance to avoif water or sand farther out or closer in or because the green is in reach and you don't want to go over it or short of it. Which club you pick is determined by how far you hit it, the wind, rain, how hard or soft the ground is (hard goes farther), even the kind of ball you use. You have to play and see how far each one goes for you. A good woman player will generally hit about 2/3 to 3/4 the distance of a man (around 200 yards for a driver) and a professional woman will be anywhere from 50-100 yards farther although rarely more than 270. All the other clubs will be shorter hitting.

Driver- To tee off. You can use other clubs if you have problems with the driver as many amatuers do and on most par 3 holes you would use something else depending on the distance you want to hit the ball.

3 wood- basically a driver that works better in the fairway and hits the ball somewhat shorter

5 wood - same as 3 wood but doesn't hit that ball as far. Can be used in light rough and in rare special situations

3,4,5 Irons - your "long" irons. Mostly used in the fairway, or sometimes in a shallow fairway bunker. Lower numbers hit farther. Used on longer par 3's to tee off

6,7,8,9 Irons - Your short irons - can be used for almost anything, teeing off, fairway, rough, chipping, fairway bunkers, etc. Lower number hit farther. used on shorter par 3's to tee off

Pitching wedge - very similar to the short irons but hit even shorter.

Sand Wedge - mostly used in bunkers around the green but can sometimes be used instead of a pitching wedge.

Gap wedge or Utility club - This can be almost any kind of club. a long club specifically for rough, or a third wedge to fill in a "distance gap" between the other two. Sometimes it;s just a favorite "go to" club that you hit really well and can count on.

Putter. Used on the green

Hope that helps.

Some one could write a book on this subject. There are a huge number of reasons that golfers use certain clubs in a huge number of varying situations on the golf course during any one round of golf. Check out a book at the library, buy a $10 video, or a book like "Golf My Way" by Jack Nicklaus or the "Five Fundamentals" by Ben Hogan.

It all depends the distance that you are away from the whole. for example a 500 yard par 5 you would start off with a driver which goes the farthest of all the clubs. they go from driver to about pitching wedge which will go the shortes distance.

I would look for the cost, amenities, grounds up keep, and location.
