Like you, I'm a single woman in my 20's from upstate. I live in Crown Heights currently, and do not find it safe enough for me to be comfortable. The neighborhood varies tremendously block by block. My particular block is also very loud, and I'm constantly harrassed on the street. The ride from the Franklin Ave train stop to where I work is about 40min, which isn't too bad.
I'd recommend looking into Prospect Heights, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Williamsburg, etc. The prices in all of these neighborhoods vary, and can get very very expensive, so I'd recommend getting a roommate if you can. (Or being ok living in a small studio.)
Personally, I'm moving in a few months to Prospect Heights. It's racially and ethnically diverse, not nearly as expensive as Park Slope is, and while each block can vary, it's much safer and cleaner than much of Crown Heights is.
Neighborhoods to avoid at all costs: East New York & Brownsville.
I've pasted a link to a message board/info site for some of the Brooklyn Neighborhoods. You might find it useful!

Most any part of Brooklyn wouldn't be much more than a 30 minute train ride into Manhattan..Bedford Styvessant is the closest but might be a rough neighborhood for someone to move to if not from there...I would say Brooklyn Heights might be a good and affordable choice for you.

Try: Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Carroll Gardens, Clinton Hill. All are great neighborhoods. I live in Prospect Heights, which is a little less pricey than Park Slope, and it's about 20 minutes on the subway to my job in midtown, plus there are a ton of restaurants and cool bars and things to do around.

The last answerer is mistaken. Bensonhrst is very far and way more then 1/2 hr on the train.
Anyway. i very much enjoyed living in fort greene. Cobble hill is great as well. Park slope is a little further but very nice.
Williamsburg is fun, but imho over populated by trust fund students.

I would suggest East Flatbush. The area near Beverly and Marlborough Road is a nice area. My cousin have lived there for quite some time. It is quiet and somewhat secluded. The Q train is not too far away which will take you into Manhattan. Good luck

Hey Kay,
First I live in Brooklyn Crown Heights to be exact......it is safe to me.......Now there is Clinton Hills, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, Williamsburg.....What matters is what trains you will need to take to work......
I don't know you, so I will suggest Fort Greene, Clinton Hill-it's fun and funky over there....but i really suggest you take your time and look around to see what you like and don't like......Peace.
