Cognac and brandy are twins. The only difference is that Cognac is the twin made in the Cognac region of France from grapes grown and harvested in the Cognac region. So the correct answer is all Cognacs are brandies, but only brandy from the Cognac region can be truly called Cognac. Unlike wine, cognac is a distilled produce (sometimes multiple times), quite similar to whisky, with the alcohol content to match (80proof is 40% alcohol by volume)..
Much like Cognac, Champagne is specific sparkling wine made from grapes grown, harvested, fermented and bottled in the Champagne region of France. Like American viticultural areas, Champagne is a very specific geographical area in france. Grapes are harvested an fermented into wine. Yeast added creates both the alcohol and the bubbles, which require the thick bottles associated with sparkling wines, including champagne. More and more sparkling winemakers are calling their sparklers champagne, but the French freak out about it. Truly if it's not from Champagne, the sparkler must be called a sparkling wine, possibly made in the "champagne method." So all Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparklers are Champagne. Like "still" or regular wine, the alcohol runs 12-15% alcohol by volume.
Whisky is also a distilled product, made from grains instead of grapes (corn, rye, etc). It's alcohol content is also in the 80-86 or more proof range (40-43% alcohol by volume).
Higher proof liquors include "151 Rum" which if 151proof or 75.5% alcohol by volume. And of course pure grain alcohol (such as "Everclear" is 100% alcohol by volume (200proof)). And if you've ever been to a college party, you may have had pure grain alcohol in one form or another (Mojo or Purple Je$u$. though that dates me to the 60s!)
