Tying your hair up in a scarf at night is a good idea for a few different reasons:

1) It helps you retain your hairstyle
2) It prevents the absorbant material in your pillow from drying out your hair
3) It helps to prevent your hair from breaking off

Every hair type (kinky, wavy, straight, etc) is different. But for my own hair type, I tie my hair down for the above reasons.

Letting your hair loose while you are sleeping is best, because if you have it tied up it will rub against your pillow and break where the tie is in your hair. This will make your hair frizzy and unhealthy looking.

I have a metre of hair, and i don't care if I look like the dog's breakfast in the morning: It is tied! After you choke on it once, that's it! (I move a LOT in my sleep)

A braid is usually pretty good though, if you have the time: It's not as tangled, and sometimes you get a little wave in it.

Tie it up in satin. The oil from your hair will get on your face and clog your skin up and sleeping on your hair is damaging to it drying it out and causing split ends.

It's better to wrap up your hair nightly, to reduce tangling and split ends and hair breakage. I never went to bed without wrapping up my hair.

Tying it up. It is easier to comb in the morning. I use a big fat scrunchy so it doesn't feel uncomfortable when I roll over.

If you have hair long enough to put in a high pony tail, it will give you added volume at the crown. My hair is short and it will be all jacked up in the morning if I even wear a headband!

sleeping on a pillow that doesnt have a silk pillowcase or w/e will pull/break hair off!!! wrapping your hair up at night with a silk scarf keeps your hair soft, no breakage

i say loose...easier to fix in the morning without the big rubberband buldge. also having your hair up tight all night can cause headaches or soarness. from being to tight or from tossing and turning pulling it this way and that.
i guess
