the difference between the $120 and the $150 is the $30 they got back, not the $20 the clerk kept.
the $120 is the $100 for the room and the $20 the clerk kept. so you don't add $20 to the $120 to get $10 missing
you add $30 to the $120 to get the original $150

Creative accounting did the trick.
Actually,
They actually paid a total $120 for the room, $100 to the hotel and a $20 "tip" for the clerk. That plus the $30 that they were originally overcharged makes the $150. You cant add the $20 onto the $120, as it is already part of the $120.
$100 for the room. That's how much the hotel got. That's $33.33... each.
They "gave" the clerk a $20 "tip". That's $6.66... apiece.
$33.33... + $6.66...= $ 39.99... ($40.00)
$40 x 3 = $120
($100 + $20) + $30 = $150

Trick question. 5 10's, one per each guy, 2 for the clerk. The 3 guys did not pay 120 for the room cause 150-50 is 100. The other 10, there is not other 10. anyway, can I have the ten points cause I took out pencil and paper to do this.

the last $10 was given to the 3rd guy
they each gave $50 so x 3guys=150
less overcharge of $50
which makes it $100 for the rm
the clerk took 20$ fr the overcharged $50 so your'e left with $30 for the 3 guys to share

The $20 that the clerk takes has to be taken out of the equation. If he stole it then the room never initially cost $150, it cost $130.
Room - $100 (actual cost)
Refund - 3 X $10
Clerk - $20
there's your $150
Math does work, as long as you get your facts straight.

Actually the guys only paid 150 bucks, but they each got 10 dollars back each, that's 30 bucks. MINUS the 20 bucks the clerck pocketed, that comes out to 100 bucks. (what the hotel got)
40 X 3 = 120 (the twenty dollar "tip" is included)

Ok each guy paid $50 first. That is $150
Over charged by $50. That makes the total $100.00
Clerk gave each guy back $10.00. Total $130.00 spent.
Clerk pocketed the $20.00.
$130 plus $20.00 is $150.00.
There is no left over $10.00

you have to subtract the 20 he kept from the 120 we paid because we should have gotten that back
the room was only 33.33 each not the 40.00

hello,
Well, after some thinking and trying to get the math to work on paper, the only solution i can think of is this:
The fees and taxes.
At least that's what i'm thinking. I know one thing math does not equal reality in this question.
God bless
Good question to ponder.
josie31 has it right(i think). Guys don't know about the "extra tip" so they have more money to spend.
