fifty,
Actually the concept of two months salaries and buying diamonds came from DeBeers. They ran an excellent marketing campaign to move people from colored gemstones to diamonds. They also managed to keep diamonds valuable seeing that they are actually fairly common.

I tried this logic on my boss.

He told me to take six months off because I'm such an asshole that I was sure to get divorced at least twice, and it was easier to do everything in one stretch.

I couldn't argue with that.

I know that I have heard this. I think it is ridiculous. My wedding ring cost $25. It is just a simple band. Yes we will go and get new ones because at the time we were extreemly financially strapped, I will be getting a whole set a 3 ring set 2 for me and my husbands. I want my engagement ring to be more spectacular than my wedding and still I will not spend more than about $500 on the whole set.If you really want to spend that much then go ahead. If your wife-to-be wants you to spend that, then maube you should reconsider only because, love is not about money but a feeling!!

Yeah, traditionally you're supposed to spend 2 months salary on her rings, but it's generally accepted that you just buy the best thing you can afford at the time. HOWEVER, don't do like my fiance did. He bought my rings (500$ together) said he didn't have money for anything more and then spend 1200 $ on a friggin' paintball gun. Yeah, I'm still with the guy, but I hate my ring and never wear it.

Sounds like you wanna quit your job so you don't have to buy her an expensive ring? Just choose a ring that you think she would like and you can afford or are willing to spend.

Besides, most women are happy with the ring they recieve. At least for me, it's the love and meaning behind it, not the size of the diamond nor the extravagant setting it's in.

In some countries It is a years salary I would stick with the 3 months. Or you could buy a fake one if she's doesn't know that real diamond cuts glass.

To be honest, I had never heard of this until I started planning for my wedding. Had my fiance' spent that much money on my ring, I would have slapped him lol. There are more important things then the cost of the ring and there are other things to spend money on..or what I do best, put it in a savings account. The cost is not important, it's the meaning of the ring.

You can quit your job forever if you want, what's a ring got to do with it? The fact that you asked this question doesn't demonstrate the maturity level of someone that about to get married. Whoever's influence you're under needs to change - why would a bride, that expects a ring worth two months salary, want and un-employed groom? Think about it!

I just wanted to say, good for you for pointing out that diamonds and the whole "2 months salary" business have nothhing to do with "tradition" and everything to do with marketing and profit in the jewellery industry.

More people really need to be aware of it!

Um, quitting your job=bad. Spending more than you can afford on a wedding ring=bad. Getting married in the first place if you are this apprehensive before you've even bought the ring or said 'till death do we part' = BAD!!! If these 'traditions' upset you so much, but you do have total faith in your love for each other & know you can make it, then make the ceremony your own. tattoo wedding rings on your fingers, or get plain bands to save money, or in your vows say "for as long as our love remains" instead of death till we part....... whatever fits you both. Its your wedding, your marriage, your love. The rest is just an outward display of whats already there.

Two months salary on a wedding ring is stupid, or for the rich only. If you quit your job, you likely won't have anyone to give a ring to!

If a guy has to use 2 months' salary to pay for the ring, then it costs too much. While he's saving for that, he won't have money to pay other necessary expenses like bills, mortgage or rent, groceries, gas, etc.
