no... My dad has had one ever since I was born. If he didn't have it I wouldn't recognize him.

Now a rapist mustache on the other hand... that's a different story.

Yes, it often means you're trying to hide something, maybe a lack of a chin. There are two mains reasons why men grow beards: one is to look older and the other is because they have hang ups about their virility. It is a known fact that you can never trust a man with a beard and if I were chosen for jury service I would take this into account.
I feel qualified to comment on this since I grew a beard twice: the first time was to make myself look ugly, but people said it suited me; the second time was because I couldn't be bothered, which probably does portray me in bad light.

A beard only makes people look scruffy when it's unkept. If a beard is the same as the hair color and and neatly trimmed than I think it looks fabulous. Look at Sean Connery, would you say he's portrayed in a "bad light"? Definately not! Thousands of woman adore the man including me and my mom. What I don't get is the single nub of hair centered right under the lower lip. Now that makes me think ew, gross!!

A beard can be very sexy, if kept up. If you look like ZZ Top then I'd have to say no. Just looks messy and then your whole image is based on that. But if its well trimmed then theres definately nothing wrong with it and people will still see that you care about your hygiene and appearance. It's like anything else you wear or have on your body ie. hair, nails...long as you take care of it, we notice that but if you let it go wild because you're too lazy or just don't care, we notice that also.

Not if you keep it groomed and well trimmed. Some people can grow a full beard so it looks patchy-I don't think they should attempt to grow beards. Are you wondering because of a certain job or perhaps a girl? I

Unfortunately, it can definately give people the wrong impression. If you are trying to make an "Executive" position, I would stick to a clean cut look. If not...rock the beard! Just keep it trimmed and neat looking.

My father would say that in modern society it is condsidered the proper way for a man to groom himself. Otherwise it would indicate that he does not have a home or enough money to groom himself properly.

Some people also think by wearing hair over certain parts of the face is an unconscious behavior civil people use to hide something. For instance, women who more often wear bangs are hiding their intelligence. Men who wear go-tees are hiding the fact they lie alot. I really haven't put that to a study, but it would be intersting to poll it.
