Paint the stains over with some clear coat varnish. Varathane covers the stain with a clear coating that you can paint over. Worked for us lots of times, expecially with condensation problems we had a while back.

There's this stuff called Kilz that you use as a primer. It covers everything. It's specifically made to keep stains and rust from coming through. Check at Home Depot.

you need to do another coat of paint. really you should have sanded down the surface first..too late now. Why is the ceiling wooden? Do you live in a log cabin?

Zinsser-Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer. I bought mine at Home Depot. I recently painted my kitchen cupboards, which were dark, and they turned out very good, no dark seeping threw. Also use sponge roller when you use it, with 2 light coats, then regular paint.

You needed to use a special primer (like Kilz) under the paint.

You are going to need a good primer sealer. I don't know what color your final coat will be, but many primer sealers are tintable, so they will better match you final coat. This means, you might have to only paint over the primer sealer once, not twice.
