I joined this website today and am shocked at the poor spelling and lack of accurate punctuation. These are not odd mistakes but a complete lack of regard for the English language. Eleven years at school - no wonder that many children struggle to learn the 3Rs.

They are still importanrt in terms of education, as two of the four pieces of English GCSE coursework are marked for spelling, punctuation and grammar, as are two sections of the exam.

Personally, I think that poor spelling and grammar say a lot about a person. The pedant in me won't allow me not to write properly!

I would say for the most part, they are still highly important in the business world. Everywhere else, it seems, there is a total disregard for spelling and grammar. It's actually a pet peeve of mine to abbreviate every little word and or have everything spelled incorrectly or even lack of punctuation. The only time I do that is the rare text message to a friend. Otherwise, I prefer to do as I learned years ago when I was in school. Of course, I'll have occasional misspellings and improper grammar, but I'm only human. I make mistakes too.

Spelling and punctuation are extremely important. As it becomes harder and harder for today's youth to get a job, if they can write properly, including good spelling, grammer and punctuation, this gives a prospective employer an insight into their education. Whatever career someone may choose, spelling and punctuation will always remain an important factor. In this age of text messaging, it is all too easy to transfer the text language onto paper. So all you people who don't have lazy thumbs, take heed and remember it's your future.

Bad spelling and poor grammar are reflections of a generation raised without books. People who read a lot spell correctly and use proper grammar when writing. I am convinced that there are many individuals on sites like this that have never read an entire book from cover to cover. Time spent on the computer makes one a type faster but it tends to create people that are woefully lax in spelling and grammar. Of course this will hurt them in the real world when reports, summaries, or briefs need to be prepared according to standards of written English. But they will find that out soon enough when they are turned down for three or four high-paying jobs.

In this day, and age, not really. It's shocking to the people that know how important good grammar, and spelling are when they first sign up. The educational system in this country has really taken a downward spiral, and our youth in all their infinite wisdom (pun intended), don't see the seriousness of it. We, the adults, parents, educators have allowed our children to dummy themselves, because..., well I don't know why.
I like coming to this site, and answering questions. I tend to correct, and remind people to try, and correct their spelling. I'm sure some will try hard, and do better, but most "dummies" just don't get it...

I do agree with you. Apparently now when children do their G.C.S.E's punctuation an Grammar don't matter as long as the facts are written down it doesn't matter. The problem I think is chidren don't write letters they just text or E-mail. Ok with E-mail you need to be able to spell but, the art of writing seems to have been forgotten!

I guess it is important when you are writing letters and typing up reports and important documents but when it comes to sending a text message on a mobile phone, then spelling is not an issue at all.

A majority of people on here are probably rushing to get in as much answers as they can and often do not check their spelling before they submit them.

Sometimes people get too lazy to utilize the spell check programs and too ignorant to realize that they can't spell. I am not surprised because I even checked over my niece's homework, and corrected her teacher's mistakes she actually marked punctuation that shouldn't be there. I hope she was tired and just got sloppy, otherwise I will tell my sister to have her transferred out of that class.

Absolutely, but you wouldn't know it by reading questions and answers here. I hate to sound like my dad, but when *I* was in school...

Seriously, we had a grade drop for every misspelled word. An "A" became a "B", etc. We learned the importance of using the dictionary to be sure. There was no "check spelling" link then.

I blame it on the schools. I have checked my grand children's work, and keep in mind they are making good grades, and found their handwriting and spelling to be horrible. When I comment on it, I get "The teacher doesn't care."

Horrible legacy there. The teacher doesn't care.

* sigh *

Yes they are. Very important if you are in a job.

I am 33 and I have had to go back to school to learn more about English. As I wasn't very good at English at school.

I think that on the computer we tend to let our hair down, and we do what we want, also there is a lot of short hand about now a days.

Don't you think so?
