I faced the same question many years ago. I decided to call as many charities as I could and have them send me their annual reports and brochures. I then read through them and found the chairty that best suited my personal beliefs and which I felt needed the most amount of help. Charity work usually doesn't pay well, if at all, and if you are going to do something for the world then it is best that it is going to make a difference or one which will make you the happiest in doing and enrich your soul.

Yes, and we need more people like you. Well...if you want to volunteer that is.

I am a volunteer coordinator for a kids mentoring program (kind of like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, but that's not who I work for). Anyway, I've been trying to recruit volunteers for the past 3 weeks and only 1 person has shown an interest, but even that person cannot do it due to his schedule. It's so frustrating to find people who actually want to do something for free anymore, or else all the people who are willing are too busy working for other non-profits.

I work at a women's shelter. We could always use volunteers on the crisis line. Find your local women's shelter and volunteer to be on the crisis line. If that doesn't appeal to you, big brothers big sisters is a great place to volunteer. If you are looking for actual work experience, you'll probably have to wait until someone is hiring. It can be hard to get a job because so many of these positions are grant funded and that can get shakey.

I would suggest "Big Brothers/Big Sisters". This is a great program to help unfortunate children to be taken under your wing and make them feel special.
