clip his fingernails. and tell him that is not acceptable. Scratching is not nice you need to do nice and show him nice touching.

Does he go to a play group or something, where he could have seen people do this? mabey he doesnt know its wrong, i would stand him on the floor when he scratches and firmly say "no, its not nice to scratch" then put him in a time out room or stairs for 2 minuets, it may take quite a few times to reinforce as my 2 year old went through a phase of bitting and this worked with that. I wouldnot advise that you scratch him back because that will confuse him as he would be thinking, "if mummy can do it why cant i", remember children learn from what they see. good luck.

on top of cutting his nails, explain to him how rude it is to scratch people, then ask him if he wants to be scratched back and just give him a little taste of what it feels like, i know it's wrong but he needs to learn somehow. you don't want to beat him for that little thing.or take something from him everytime he does. 2 year olds understand alot more than we think they do. i have a two year old also. i have 2 other children and taking something away from them and not giving them their favorite snack is just one of my punishments.

They all do this! It's just to see what will happen. Wait till he starts biting people--! Just gently pull him away and tell him NO, and give him a time out. It takes a LOT of repetition before they get the hint. My niece didn't stop biting until once she bit herself on the arm by accident.

always remove the child at the time when he scratches someone, put him on a chair and make him sit there, the rule of thumb is mins for time out = age

I hate to say it, but the scratching them back seems to work. I think they do it for attention.
