VW made there cases with out of a Magnesium-Aluminum alloy, and I'm pretty sure all pure aluminum cases where made for the aftermarket(unless some one knows some block numbers for factory ones which I may just not know about). But anyways this alloy is by large the most common material for VW cases out there.
Anyways have you pulled the motor? How bad is it? Is it all ready completely broken down and were just talking about the case? Anyways easier thing to try, if it's not to bad is to block everything(make it water thought), spray it with oven cleaner, and hit it with a pressure washer(save yourself the mess and use a car wash). If it's really bad then they are a major pain to get clean and I'd rather pay a shop to do it if you can for cheap. My uncles 64 1200 took hours to get clean, it was honestly that bad. For other ideas check out thesamba.com . May find some better ideas, that's just what we've done to clean them.

Berryman used to make a product called Chem dip that worked well on them. I assume since you say its magnesium its a older Beetle motor. I used to have to scrub them in solvent back in the good old days. They come clean fairly easy. But with today's environmental laws it may be harder to get a good solvent.
Call a machine shop and see if the could do it for you. Cleaning should be less then $50

Power washing works well and you can use a product called "Aluminum Jelly" to make it really clean and remove stains.
