make appointments with advisors from the college(s) you want to attend, gather all of the needed paperwork, and ask questions...anything you can think of to ask to help you on your way...advisors are there to help you, stop by the financial aid office at the colleges and get information from them as well, pick up catalogs and brochures too

You should apply to a college first, then worry about financial aid. When admitted to a college, the financial aid office will put together a financial aid package for you. It usually includes federal student loans, maybe some work study - that type of stuff.
Without knowing what school you'll be attending (as some have some type of financial aid than others), applying for financial aid doesn't make much sense.

When applying for financial aid, you're asked to list the name and code of the college(s) you're applying to. So, both application processes should occur simultaneously for the most part. Which ever college you're accepted to, the lending institution will give offer you a financial package based on various factors about the school (i.e. tuition, etc)
I hope this helps.

Apply to the school first b/c most of the time when you apply for financial aid they need to know which school you will be attending. Plus, the school you're eventually accepted to may offer you scholarships/grants that will affect how much money you actually need to borrow. In any event, it doesn't hurt to go to the fafsa website to familiarize yourself with everything you'll need; I think the address is www.fafsa.edu, this is the fed. government financial aid website. Good luck, and congrats for making the decision to continue your education.

You have to apply to FA first before going to college if you want money assistance. If you don't apply for FA you can go to college but you will need to pay everything out of your pocket. If by any chance you don't qualify for FA, they'll help you find a student loan that will pay for your expenses, and don't worry about loans, you don't have to pay them back until 6months after you graduate. The monthly pymt is not a lot either. Just talk to a career advisor at your school. You can even ask for help at the college you want to go
