Bubonic plague outbreaks still occur in many parts of the world. The plague was not spread by rats, it was spread by the fleas on the rats. This dread disease is treatable today with modern pharmaceuticals and a major rreason that it is not more prevalent in our world today is people practising better hygiene. During the middle ages when the plague wiped out half the population of Europe people were absolutely FILTHY, never bathing and living in squalor, a real invitation for flea infestation.
