Over the past few days there have been mention of debates in this section.

Since a religious belief is based on faith is there really a point to a debate?

There can be debates on specific issues (ID vs. Evolution), but will it really sway anyone's opinions?

I'm not really keen on arguments or debates. I preferr to state my opinion and walk away, if possible. I will listen to what the opposeing side has to say, out of respect. But usually end up agreeing to disagree and leave it at that, without pushing for my views to be bowed to as correct.

Religious beliefs are not based on faith as they are really based on the principle that there is a God and there is a devil. There are certain things that we have to do to stay on 'his good side'. For example we have the ten commandments that moses had rewitten after God gave it to him cause he got angry and broke the tablets on the Hebrews. We have to count on laws that are based on Moses' memory. God alone knows how right he got it. Not to mention that there are scrolls in egypt defuting the fact that moses actually exsisted and that there were more than ten commandments or codes of life.
Also, who knows what the first bible looked like. Moses wrote 10 books, how come there are only five in the bible.
Just the same way when a story is told, by the time it gets to an 11th person, it is distorted and we have no idea of what actually happened. So is the same with bible.
People claim to have religion but they do not always have faith.
Not to mention it has nothing to with God that people say do and do not exist.
Issues like this cause religion to be debateable.
Yes it can. Factual statements are needed. And when that happens it proves my point that there is religion but no faith. Not in God anyway.

I don't see what good a debate will be, you can answer once, and if it isn't what the person wants to hear they will just give you a negative.
As a matter of fact this will be my last answer here as this is not what I thought it would be. I thought this was a place where people came to answer/ask questions about God, and really wanted to hear the truth. But mostly all I have seen are probably the most ridiculous question/derogatory remarks about Jesus, God, and the Bible. I really feel empathy for all the people that have said blasphemous things against God, His son, and Mary.
But I won't participate further because all this place really does is bash Christians.

Debates can sway the opinions of those listening to them (though not generally of those engaged in them).

The thing is, although religious people talk all day long about faith, the reality is that about 50% or so of them believe because they find the evidence compelling, or simply because they have never stopped to question what they were taught.

That means that about half of those who are religious are open to rational arguments. Even some in the other half can be swayed. The ranks of atheists are filled with ex-ministers who realized it was all a bunch of crap after years of study.

Even if you try to sway your opinion, you can't do it. You are what you are; what you say reflects what is in your heart. If you try to be someone else during debate, and if you start showing off, soon you will be caught as a liar and bring to yourself an embarrassment. I learned to speak my opinion by telling what I believe in. So the motto is I believe, therefore I spoke. It isn't 1+2 = 3; it is articulating your mind around what you believe by using the power of the tongue.

they often do sway opinions. They are not meant to sway the opinions of the debaters but that happens also.
All religions must have facts otherwise they are only made up. faith is merely choosing to believe in something. That isn't necessarily a thing to be proud of. Christians dont accept it of others concerning other areas of life, and for good reasons.

No one will be swayed. Debate is most times mental masturbation for an audience and it is usually designed to either convince the debater of his/her own stance and the correctness thereof OR to just get digs in and harass the opposition.

Is the purpose of debate to sway another's opinion?

That is true, one cannot debate the issue of religion, b/c no matter what, its based on faith and faith for me dont change by debate, It is pointless to even discuss the matter.

The word of God is not DEBATEABLE, I tell them what the bible says. & they start a debate, I don't touch on any subject unless I myself know the answer. A debate is where people argue back & forth. That I will not do, Sorry, I am not a Debator
