don't leave the food out all day. it's actually healthier for cats to have a feeding schedule rather than have food all the time.

Have you another room you could put your kitten in ?A bathroom isn't really a very healthy place for her to eat and sleep anyway, even without ants,as the air is too moist, that's what attracts the ants ! You'll then need to get some ant repellent but close the bathroom door when you use it as it could poison your kitten if she goes in. If you don't have a spare room, could you maybe make a 'kitten corner' in your living room or kitchen, rather than put her back in the bathroom.

I am definitely supportive of cats having a feeding "schedule" after about a year and I agree with you that a kitten needs to have food available when he is still a kitten.
Try all the suggestions given you here. Some years I am plagued with ants in the house, some years not. The little Grant's stakes with the tiny holes are safe for your children and the kitten. They have always worked for me though it might take a few weeks for the ants to disappear.

You are very wrong to reject perfectly sound advice of a feeding schedule. Cats do not naturally have constant access to food, and, with a very few exceptions, constant access to food will lead to overfeeding (out of boredom). Best bet is to feed your cat canned food, twice a day (if he is younger than 3-4 months, maybe a bit more often) for about twenty minutes. Cats are fit to go without food with NO HARM for three days; fasting for twelve hours or so is very beneficial to his digestive tract - he can completely digest the food he's taken before he stuffs in another kind.
About ants... I would advise general cleaning of the house. I am positive it cannot be only the kitten's food that is bringing them into your home. You need to take care of that problem, because ants will get into your food too.

If the ants are getting into his food prior to feeding, then put the food into an air tight container, but if the ants are climbing into your cats food dish, then use a glass bowl for food. It's hard for ants to climb up smooth surfaces like a glass bowls. Also you could elevate your cat's food. Hope this helps.

um.... I would treat the house for ants first.. that should stop them from going into the catfood!
if your cat had fleas, you wouldnt treat just the cat, you would have to treat the whole house... same with lice in a kids hair. Gotta do the whole house!
I used to have some kind of dog food bowl for my dog that had a separate ring around the bowl. It supposedly confused the bugs to where they went under the lip of the bowl or just got stuck in the first ring around the bowl.
I am not sure about a cucumber, but who's to say the cat wont drag that off and hide it somewhere??

I had the same problem. I ended up having to get my house sprayed because they were everywhere. I would suggest keeping the food up until you can get that done. I tried everything else & until I had a professional come spray I couldn't get rid of them. Haven't had a problem since.

You won't believe this but cucumber peels work like a charm. Dunno why, but believe me it's the easiest and safest way to get rid of ants.
