You don't HAVE to use the recipe with glycerine (which, by the way people, is used in icing to hold in moisture and keep it from setting up rock-hard). There's loads of other recipes you can find for the icing, which I'm guessing is for the Sachertorte. In that case, you can melt chocolate (7 oz semisweet) with a little butter (2 tbsp) in a double boiler, let it cool, and use that. Just as good but with easy-to-find ingredients. If it's still too solid, reheat it and mix in some corn syrup.

I just asked a personal chef that I know and she said she has never heard of using glycerin in food.

It's used for lip glosses and soaps.

Who told you that you need glycerin for a cake? Not unless it's a urinal cake!

Glycerine is frequently used in fondant icings. I have seen it at the craft store (sometimes it is in the aisle with the soap making supplies, and sometimes with the cake/candy making supplies). If you have a shop in town that sells baking supplies, they would probably have it, too.

The last time, I bought some from a pharmacist. You may give them a call to ask if it's available or not
