These are really hard to find, believe it or not! I do NOT want the braided kind. Preferably the oriental carpet kind.

you know.. I have never used them.. If you cannot find them at Home Depot/Heckinger's/Lowe's, then go to this website:

Maybe it's because I don't buy carpet that often, but I haven't seen those rectantular carpet treads for stairs since the late 1950's. The last I saw were those past one things (like you'd find stickums in your bathtub) or full carpeting. I remember my family changing to the full carpeting for the stairs, and I know the full carpeting is what's in the expensive homes. I'd like to add that that full carpeting is a pain to vacuum...so I'd suggest a dark flecked pattern (light enough to see where you're walking but dark enough not to show dirt) (not indoor-outdoor because you'll slip on it), but choose either something with a rubber backing or plan to nail down the carpeting to the wood. Full carpeting for the stairs is also quiet and easier on the arches of your feet.

You mentioned oriental carpet (rug) type. My thoughts would be that that kind of rugging is made differently than carpeting and would wear out too fast, and the strings would eventually catch on your heels and you'd fall. Sears used to handle rug, and maybe you can pick up some there on sale. Call and ask...go in there when you have a lot of time to look at colors and feel the nap.

The on-line Home Depot has a number of them listed, but most, unfortunately, seem to be temporarily out-of-stock. You might try your local Home Depot. At the link below, type "carpet stair tread" in the search box. Then print out the resulting pages, pick the one you want, and have them order them for you. Some real nice looking ones! Good luck!!

Any carpet store should have or be able to get them for you. If you're looking for oriental treads I'd suggest you go to an oriental carpet store since it is a specialty item.
