Religion has always served various purposes. Not only does it control the masses, but it also helps people feel as though they understand what's going on in the world, makes them feel as though they each have a purpose for being here, and helps ease their fear of death.

I used to believe that, but I don't anymore. I think that the concept of "god" already existed, and was simply co-opted for that purpose later.
I think that the origin of the "god" concept is in our cognitive biases. Even pre-verbal infants see intentionality in the unguided movements of objects (trees in the wind, etc.). Combine that with our innate fear/hatred of strangers, and our need for affiliation, and you're more than halfway to inventing "god" already.

God is real and no one could ever convince me otherwise. If you are truly saved and truly belive, you know God is real. You can feel his presence, you know when he is with you. I'm telling you, when you go to church and hear a good serman, if you believe, you can feel that God is in that room. It is the most amazing, most powerful feeling in the world. God can do wonderful things for you if you open up your mind to him and invite him into your life.
