Let's make this easy. Assuming you're getting all your programming from your DirecTV box, including local channels, you will need to purchase two sets of A/V cables (the ones w/ red, white, and yellow RCA plugs), one short (3ft or 6ft) coax cable, and an RF modulator box.

Your current setup probably has the satellite cable into your box, then a coax from the box to your TV and you get your programming through Channel 3.

Take one AV cable, plug the three ends to the box, plug the other three ends into the video/audio inputs of your DVD recorder. Now you'll be able to record programs.

The next steps allow you to playback your recorded discs:

Take the new coax and attach to the RF or ANT Out of the RF modulator. Detach the old coax from the TV and attach to the ANT In of the RF modulator. Then attach the new coax to the TV.

Take the other A/V cable, plug one end into the video/audio outputs of your DVD Recorder, plug the other end into the RF Modulator. Make sure the box and TV is always set to Channel 3 (or 4).

To watch your box, switch the RF Modulator to ANT. To watch your Recorder, switch the RF Modulator to MOD (or whatever switches in your Recorder).

Hope this helps.

To simplify your connections, first take your satellite cable and connect it to your satellite box, and from your satellite box to your DVD recorder , either from another cable connection , (out from the box to the in on your recorder.
Or RCA or composite jacks (yellow, red, white wires) out from the box to in on your recorder.
Then from the recorder (out) to the in of your TV. You can use either cable or RCA jacks for this connection also.
