hurt my 4 year old son? He eats a well balanced diet but just loves the taste of milk. He would rather drink milk then sweet drinks.

Don't worry about it. A fiend I grew up with from the age of 4 (and am still friends with) refused to drink anything but milk through his entire childhood.

Has this had any long term effect?

Yes his bones are as strong as steel (has never broken one despite some nasty falls and accidents) but that is it. There has never been any detrimental effect from the milk.

Four-year olds should be having whole or 2% milk, unless they have a weight problem. His diet should consist of 40% good fats. Filling up on skim milk could be harmful if he gets too full to eat all that he should. If possible, sweet drinks should never even be offered. Juices are so much more harmful than most parents realize. Milk sugars also cause cavities though, so make sure he always brushes his teeth before bed. Of course, double-check everythig I've said with your Pediatrician.

I think 1% 2% or skim would be fine. It's great that he loves milk more than sodas or koolaid. It will help with his bones and teeth as he grows up and he won't have as many cavaties. I had milk allergies and couldn't drink milk from the time I was 5 until I was like 15, so when before I got my braces, I had to have 8 cavities filled, and no matter how well I brush my teeth, I still get cavities because when my perm teeth were growing, they didn't have much calcium to help them out.

So, I don't think all the milk will hurt your son, just try to get him to drink some water too.

My pediatrition had recommended not to give skim to my daughter till she was at least 5 years old. The fat won't hurt, they need it. So she drank whole milk and is still a string bean. But like anything too much of a good thing can be bad. Plus, every ped's advice will be different.

Doctors are not taught nutrition in medical school, what they know regarding milk intake is what the dairy board has put out as marketing propaganda. Many people are beginning to believe that mother nature indeed knows best - that human children wean off the breast for a reason, they don't need milk any longer. Cows produce milk for a reason, to feed *their* babies, not humans. For other opinions (not funded by the dairy industry) on milk consumption look into holistic nutrtional information, and www.notmilk.com has a lot of information on diseases linked to or exacerbated by milk consumption. For another perspective on what milk is/does read the article http://www.newstarget.com/002684.html

Give him all the milk he wants. Milk won't hurt him just make sure he dosen't get constipated from it. He probaly dosen't need skim but check with your dr. he might still need the fat from 1 or 2% milk.

Milk is healthy! Skim, fat free would be best. Whole milk would put weight on him. After my daughter turned 2, her ped said it was okay that she drink Skim or whatever we prefer to buy and use. I wish my daugher still liked milk! We always had to put Nestle Quick in it, strawberry or chocolate, to get her to drink milk.

Milk is all sugar and raises blood sugar levels. It's really not all that healthy. Most pediatricians are saying to limit the intake.

milk is not going to hurt him per-say.....since it is skim....I would try to give him some water form time to time though.......and good for you at least you do not have to try to keep soda and kool aid to a treat not an every day all day drink.

Milk is good but to much could be bad. Talk to your pediatrician about it.
