It has been 2 days now and she keeps moving the kitten to another room in the apartment. Should I let her do that or keep the kitten in the room where it was born and has been staying? Is it okay to let her carry the kitten wherever she wants to bring it and let her handle it?

First, it's odd that your cat had 1 kitten???

Chances are your cat simply wants somewhere quiet to nest with the baby kitten-- maybe you've been too intrusive (enthusiasm is hard to quell when there's a new litter) on her need for privacy.

She's obviously unhappy with being discovered, so confine her to an area with everything she needs and let her think she's hidden, don't let the neighbor kids come in and disturb her and minimize any handling. Just feed her, pat her head, tell her she's a good mom and make yourself scarce. Closets tend to work the best, the old laundry basket or box w/ a towel trick, and keep the door nearly closed for her and she'll be just fine with her baby.

No, this is not good. She is feeling threatened and just protecting her baby. You need to set up a box or lined basket in a very protected place, and maybe even put a light covering over it - so the mom can still get out easily. Have you guys been handling the kitten a lot? That could also cause the mom to be edgy. I think you must have noticed that it's clumsy for the mom to be carrying the kitten by the neck - and they sometimes grab it sideways and it hurts the kitten, so try to get her to stop it. Once you have the new place set up, and she tries to get the baby out, just gently lead her back to the new place with the kitty - she'll get the message. Just an aside - we had a cat a few years ago who just had one kitten (it is really unusual, you know), and once we couldn't find where she left the kitten. Turns out she put the baby in a purse of mine that was hanging off a chair in the kitchen - and she would climb in to feed the kitten and cuddle.

It's normal for mother cats to move their kittens. It's to ensure their protection against predators.

Your mama cat is perfectly capable of caring for her newborn (and moving it shows she's showing interest in caring for it), so don't worry about her moving it around. Just make sure she can't take it anywhere dangerous. Keeping her out of the basement (if you have one) would be a good idea. Just make sure she has a quiet place to be with the kitten. If the area is loud, busy, or disturbed too much, she will keep on moving until she finds a place that isn't.

And one kitten isn't odd, especially if she's a small cat or a first time mom.

She is probably feeling insecure where she is or thinks that is unsafe, it is normal for a mother to move the kitten. Just watch her to see where she goes and if it's not in the way move all of the things you have to where the kitten is, it will make the mother feel more comfortable.

The cat just wants her kitten to be in a private/ protected area away from people. Take it to where she wants it for now, set up a box for her to be in, and let it go for a few weeks. When it gets older the mom wont be so protective. Its totally normal for her to do that.

It's ok that she only had one...is it her first litter? She keeps moving the kitten because she doesn't feel safe. Leave them both alone, just make sure she gets plenty of food and water.Trust her, she knows whats shes doing!

My cat always moved her kittens when we messed with them to much, but I would just keep putting them back in the best place. It only took about two times for Mommy cat to get the point.

(Kitties are sooooo cute!)

If she keeps moving the kitten, it is usually because she feels that the current nest site is unsuitable or unsafe.

Keep an eye on her but try to interfere as little as possible.
If you have been disturbing "the nest" she may be relocating to somewhere she perceives as "safer" (or less likely to be disturbed).

Good luck!

Does she have somewhere comfortable and out of the way for her baby and herself? If she does then you're going to have to let her stay where she's established her "den" . Yes, it's ok as cats are used to moving their young and are the best at it but I think you should let her be.
