Keeping long hair looking and feeling silky is a matter of good habits. Remember that the hair should be conditioned every day whether you shampoo or not.
Use a shampoo and conditioner rich in protein and designed give smooth hair results (such as Pantene or Redken Cat).
Keep the hair trimmed as needed to remove any split ends.
Air dry the hair when possible, and always use a leave-in conditioner and anti-frizz serum when blow drying the hair to help protect against heat styling damage.
If your hair is showing signs of damage/dryness, give yourself weekly deep conditioning treatments (apply conditioner to the hair, cover with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer or wrap the head in warm towels for 20 minutes, then rinse the hair with cool water) and/or hot oil treatments once a month.
Avoid overbrushing the hair. Use a brush only as much as needed to remove tangles and smooth out the hair. Overbrushing can lead to damage, breakage and split ends. For most all styling, use a wide-tooth comb.
Keep in mind that most hair damage occurs over time and that it will take time to restore the hair to healthy condition. Healthy, well-conditioned hair will feel soft and silky regardless of it's texture and wave pattern.

get a trim, just take off any split ends. Wash hair and put a plastic cap/bag or what ever you have that you can wrap your hair in. Sit under dryer for 20 minutes rinse out your hair will be silky.
You can also just leave your hair in the plastic wrapping all day while you are doing housework or what ever you do then in the pm. rinse your hair and you will get the same results.
Weekly Hot Oil Treatments are great as well.
Just make sure you get trims every 6 to 8 weeks nothing drastic just the split ends.

My hair is long. What can I do to make it silky? Wash it with a good moisturizing shampoo like Nexxus Therappe and then condition it with Nexxus Therappe conditioner. Squeeze extra water, do not blow dry... only towel dry. Give it about 40 minutes to totally dry. Spray with "Silk Elements" silicone shine spray and use a flat iron or straightening comb to go over all pieces of your hair. Voila! Beautiful.
p.s. get a good hair vitamin too... vitastrand's the best: http://www.mikalclay.com

Treatments... Put some in your hair whilst wet, put on a shower cap, and put the hairdryer on it to warm it up. Heating up treatments helps them to work better. Try this at least twice a week. You should notice the difference straight away.
AND might I add... Using Pantene and Sunsilk (and all other supermarket brands) and COOKING OIL... will DAMAGE your hair more extensively. You need to use PROFESSIONAL brands. Supermarket brands are full of silicon which is what makes your hair dry in the long run. STAY away from the silicon.

Please the question should say "my hair IS long" anyway keeping long hair healthy is really no problem... eating healthy food is the beginning, no drugs and dont smoke.... (my opinion) and you can moisturize with mayonaisse after you wash and towel dry then put at least one cup of mayo all trough your hair and wrap it up and leave for at least 30 minutes then rinse well also taking vitamins like a multi vitamin or even taking flax or fish oil is a great complement to healthy oft hair but check with your Dr before taking even over the counter medicine.

Apply egg on your hair, leave it on for a while. Rinse off. It will make your hair very silky. (Tip: Add two tsps of rum to the egg. It will not stink.)
or
Rinse your hair with beer.
Most importantly, eat a balanced diet that incudes egg and fishand drink lots of water. It will keep your hair looking great naturally.
