Low bypass turbo fans have been in use from the 1950's Most of the new crop of high bypass used on passenger air craft came about when special light metals and carbonfibre were strong enough to surround the spinning fan blades after 1970.

Convair. (Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft)

The Convair 990 was the first turbofan airliner, with General Electric engines. It flew in 1960.

The Rolls Royce Conway was not a true turbofan, it ony had an oversize, multistage compressor with a bypass duct.

"Sucesfully" was Pratt & Whitney / Douglas. Dc-8 completed from the factory in 1958. First flight Dec 20th 1960 going into service in 1961 N8008D.
