yes Its not a puzzle to work out, its philosophical of course it makes sound. It is meant to suggest that just because there is no one to hear something doesnt mean it never happened.

I think that there are two answers, Yes and No.
It all depends on what you call sound. If sound is the vibrations in the air caused by the falling tree hitting the ground the answer is Yes.
But if you think of sound as being the sensation experienced due to the ear drum reacting to the air vibrations caused by the falling tree the answer is No.

no! The tree itself doesn't make a sound! It is the action of the tree falling and hitting the ground that causes the noise! (how do you know the ground didn't make the noise?) the sound is a result of the energy used in the falling of the tree!

If by no-one you mean no humans then no.
Sound is made when something vibrates and sets off vibrations in the particles surrounding it, including those in your ear canal. This then makes you ear drum vibrate which in turn makes some little bones vibrate, which is then translated into sound by you brain (via some handy little nerve cells).
The tree is going to make a disturbance in the air around it, but it is not technically going to make a sound if there are no ears around to hear it.
(But as someone pointed the area is not going to be completely empty in which case the answer is yes.)

Yes it does indeed.
The question that actually needs to be answered though is, If a tree falls down when no-one is around does it actually fall down?

It makes no sound because no one saw it fell down which means that the tree didn't fall at all, maybe it got tired of standing and decided to lay down a while?

Of course it does.
It's utterly closed-minded to presume that if a person does not hear a sound it does not exist.
If all life were obliterated from the planet but audio recording devices remained operational and a tree fell ... the sound would be recorded.

Surely a noise has to be heard for it to be noise... and if no-one's around then no-one can hear, therefore its not a noise... but I'm sure the squirrels wouldn't be impressed.
