i was at lunch today and a kid (maybe 12-13 years old) came up to me and asked for a light, i just looked at him and told him to go back to school. after suffering a torrent of abuse from this little punk i turned around and told him to say that to my face...at which, he turned and jogged away.

You're lying. Not only did you give the kid a light, you also gave him all of your cigarettes, and then he hurled abuse at you anyway. When he walked away, you came out with some half-assed insult, mumbled under your breath. A bet the kid heard you say something then came back and battered you. Punkass.

You did exactly the right thing...unfortunately the abuse is something we all know will come if we try to discipline these kids in the slightest of ways...its sometimes much easier to just go along with it...so I say well done, you took the risk of being abused and stuck to your guns when the inevitable happened. Maybe we all need to be a little braver and stand up to them.

You did totally the right thing..the Nanny State is turning out a generation with no respect for themselves or anyone else..Maybe its time to stand up and be counted and stop hiding in the shadows from these mini monsters...If more of us stood up to them it would become a thing of the past..Well done

You acted in the most correct way. And also dealing with the torrent of abuse in a manner in which you didn't retaliate till the very last minute, in which he realised his error shows good manners and etiquette.

No, unless contributing to a minor is your bag. You did the right thing. The way I am though I'd have probably found out who his parents were and I'm sure you know the rest.

you did the right thing at that age if they choose to smoke they should get their own lighter. Lighting the cigarette would almost say you approve to the act.
