Yes, if it is accompanied by moral teachings (like if you worship the aliens as gods, "the aliens told us to do that so it's right to do that and it's our duty"). Religions are normative. But the belief in the mere existence of aliens wouldn't be a new religion unless you identify a new "god" or set of moral rules.

actually there are several new religions which have an alien or an alien race as the central focus point (scientology, there was another famous one which i don't remember at the moment). aliens pretty much fit perfectly into the god role: there is some possible unproved indirect proof of their existence, we practically know nothing about them if they exist, they come from outer space so they must be superior to us (we live in a tehnophile society) and they're not human (correlated with the previous -> they're better).
so belief in aliens itself can't be a religion because it is a too abstract and rational statement, but there are religions based on the belief that aliens exist

It has been for a while. some sort of desire to be special. 'not alone'
same reasons for believing in the other religions. Poor economic times. Religious revivals are the sign of increased feelings of hopelessness in a society. God while things are OK, angels or aliens when times are more disheartening
Also, Aliens has more of a scientific or naturalistic edge somewhat that superstition. And the proof for them is the same as religious 'proves', Always conveniently located out of sight

Yes. Its been a religion for as long as people have believed there is life on other planets.
Then again everyone is religious to a degree, its just that some refuse to admit it.

Possibly, the only thing against is that there is much more chance that aliens exist somewhere in the universe than that god does

I don't think so. What about in ancient times and the belief in such as the Titans? They were called gods, but we would call them aliens.

Some people think that's how Judaism began --- or more accurately the ancient Egyptian religion, from which Judaism was taken.

Not a religion.
I do believe however, that there MAY be other beings out there.
I know they are intelligent because they are staying away from us.
