any woman should be allowed to wear what she wants not forced by a bunch of ignorant men

As long as they are doing it by choice, why would I think anything of it? It's a young woman covering her hair to honor God.

If they are being forced, then that is a different matter.

For the information of people here, the question was about a hijab, not a burqa. My answer remains the same in either case, but a hijab is a head scarf and a burqa covers head to toe.

I am Muslim girl who wears the hijab and this is a poem on why women wear hijab, I think you should read it:

They say, "Oh, poor girl, you're so beautiful you know
It's a shame that you cover up your beauty so."
She just smiles and graciously responds reassuringly,
"This beauty that I have is just one simple part of me.
This body that I have, no stranger has the right to see.
These long clothes, this shawl I wear, ensure my modesty.
Faith is more essential than fashion, wouldn't you agree?"
This hijab,
This mark of piety,
Is an act of faith, a symbol,
For all the world to see.
A simple cloth, to protect her dignity.
So lift the veil from your heart to see the heart of purity.

They tell her, "Girl, don't you know this is the West and you are free?
You don't need to be oppressed, ashamed of your femininity."
She just shakes her head and she speaks so assuredly,
"See the bill-boards and the magazines that line the check-out isles,
with their phony painted faces and their air-brushed smiles?
Well their sheer clothes and low cut gowns they are really not for me.
You call it freedom, I call it anarchy."
This hijab,
This mark of piety,
Is an act of faith, a symbol,
For all the world to see.
A simple cloth, to protect her dignity.
So lift the veil from your heart to see the heart of purity.
Lift the veil from your heart and seek the heart of purity.

If you still dont understand why then i think you should ask someone who knows more about islam than you do
rather than showing yourself up as a fool

Honestly, I first thought they were somehow restricted and not free.

But then I came to hear and Respect those who stand high with dignity when with or without them... I can see that they truly love and respect their religion from the heart.

and then u have those that act like they are more than what they make the hijabs seem to be.. and tht is sadly 'nothing'..
perhaps they dont know much about their religion.

Its ok if they are in their homes or at prayer, thats fine.
What i dont agree with is when they wear them when they are about towns or are in schools or colleges.Kids with hoodies were told to put their hoods down or to take them off.
Perfect example:My Brother and his Girlfriend were out in Oldham town centre(Manchester,UK)which is heavily populated by ethnic minorities.
As they were walking through the shopping centre a group of muslim girls spat on my brothers girlfriend telling her to get out of their town, and shouting some really nasty stuff.
My brothers girlfriend was really shook up and decided to inform the police, and guess what?
The girls got away with it because they couldnt be identified for wearing the hijab

I think it's totally goofy but that is my personal thinking. I think those people take their scripture far too literally. They seem to do little except wreaking havoc and unrest on earth in the name of "Allah."

I apologize if this is a sweeping criticism, however I do not know any muslims, I only know the statements and actions I see them make in public.

Bloody good Idea in a Sandstorm, but as you dont get many in peckham high street a nice knee length skirt and blouse would be better, more hygenic, let the air circulate minimise BO that sort of thing.

It shows their devotion to their faith. With the number of people who are prejudiced against Muslims, it shows great courage to identify yourself as a Muslim in that way.

Women can wear whatever they want to wear.... if they want to cover up from head to toe let them.... I find that less offensive than what some of the so called ladies wear in the town that I live in....

Whatever they feel like I guess, yet It surely is a massive security issue at airports and passport control and the like, whilst the rest of us are subject to vigorous checks they seem to be immune to all this. Unfair me thinks.
