First of all, reading the Koran isn't enough; you have to understand the explanation and circumstances surrounding each verse, so a casual reader of the Book is liable to misunderstand its full meaning. As a Muslim, I'm telling you that from what I understand and have been taught all my life, Islam considers Christians and Jews as "People of the Book" and respects and reveres them and their Prophets very much.
Second, you say you find religion offensive. But "religion" can't come up to you and insult you, can it? If I could come up with a more relevant example, let's say someone insults a member of your family. Wouldn't you expect them to apologize? Or should we all go around insulting each other's families, not apologize, and call it freedom of expression?
Look, what you-all of us- should all be calling for right now, is to STOP insulting each other's beliefs and religions. Tolerance and respect for one another are the first steps toward world peace.

No apology should be needed. The Pope only quoted a Byzantine ruler.
*LOL* It's muslim religious leaders who should be doing the 'I'm sorry I said that ' bit. They don't get down on those who distort Islam for their own purposes. Why should they get upset every time some westerner says something about Islam?

I agree totally. I have only briefly studied the Koran, but it is very condemning of other paths/ways. It seems that many Muslim people take this faith to the extreme and act or think violently regarding its execution. I cannot understand how people can bring about such violence and hatred, thinking they have a religion of peace.

i see where you are coming from my friend but two wrongs dont make a right,
I have all ready aired my views on the subject and i just wish that people of all religious beliefs would live and let live,
we all have our own idea as to the real god, and we all think we are correct with our assumptions
If there is such a thing as god i think its about time he made an appearance and put an end to all this hatred done in his name,,
peace to all who crave it

Shouldn't non-muslims read the whole quran and not take half of the verse before they argue ?
